Description:Scott, Jackie Gleason, Piper Laurie. Wanderone seized the opportunity, perhaps flattering himself into thinking Tevis really had had him in mind. Always in the pursuit of realism, Rossen hired actual street thugs to use as extras. When Eddie is kneeling over Sarah's body, Bert again appears above him but Eddie attacks Bert, ending up on top of him. All the outstanding elements of filmmaking work in tandem here. It emphasized character — and the heightening stakes and building philosophical conflicts which developed within each billiards match. Director Rossen's daughter Carol Rossen speculates that previous adaptations focused too much on the pool aspects of the story and not enough on the human interaction.
